The city of Corsicana has a long and colorful history.  The town site was chosen in 1848 as the location for the seat of government of newly formed Navarro County.  Jose Antonio Navarro, hero of the fight for Texas independence, was given the honor of naming the city.  He said, “Call the town Corsicana after Corsica the island of my father’s birth.”

Downtown Corsicana and the Carriage District west of Downtown include one of the state’s most impressive collections of historic homes and commercial buildings.  Most of the city’s buildings and homes were built following Texas’ first commercial discovery of oil in 1894 only two blocks south of downtown.

Petroleum Park marks this historic spot as the “Birthplace of the Texas Oil Industry”.  Prior to Corsicana’s oil development, the city was an important railhead for the cotton industry with three major railroads crossing in the city.

Downtown Corsicana continues as a vibrant town center offering exciting dining and shopping choices while preserving and maintaining the rich fabric of its history.  We invite you to enjoy Historic Downtown Corsicana!
